The Y-20 project began in July 2007.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Images of the Y-20 prototype emerged at the end of 2012.[11]<\/a><\/sup> The first flight occurred on 26 January 2013.[1]<\/a><\/sup>

According to Chinese media, the Y-20 is the first cargo aircraft to use 3D printing technology.[12]<\/a><\/sup> To speed up the development, reduce the workload, and lower its manufacturing cost, Model-based definition<\/a> (MBD) design technique was also implemented, and it was the third aircraft to utilize MBD technology in the world, after Airbus A380<\/a> (2000) and Boeing 787<\/a> (2005).[10]<\/a><\/sup> A project team to implement MBD for the Y-20 program was formally formed in October 2009, and after the initial success in application on the main landing gear, MBD application was expanded to the entire aircraft and became mandatory for all contractors and sub-contractors of the Y-20 program.[10]<\/a><\/sup>
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011\u636e\u4e2d\u56fd\u5a92\u4f53\u62a5\u9053\uff0cY-20\u662f\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b3e\u91c7\u75283D\u6253\u5370\u6280\u672f\u7684\u8d27\u8fd0\u98de\u673a\u3002[12]\u4e3a\u4e86\u52a0\u5feb\u7814\u53d1\u8fdb\u5ea6\u3001\u51cf\u8f7b\u5de5\u4f5c\u91cf\u5e76\u964d\u4f4e\u5236\u9020\u6210\u672c\uff0c\u8fd8\u91c7\u7528\u4e86\u57fa\u4e8e\u6a21\u578b\u7684\u5b9a\u4e49\uff08MBD\uff09\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6280\u672f\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u7ee7\u7a7a\u4e2d\u5ba2\u8f66A380\uff082000\u5e74\uff09\u548c\u6ce2\u97f3787\uff082005\u5e74\uff09\u4e4b\u540e\u4e16\u754c\u4e0a\u7b2c\u4e09\u6b3e\u4f7f\u7528MBD\u6280\u672f\u7684\u98de\u673a\u3002[10]\u5b9e\u65bdY-20\u8ba1\u5212\u4e2d\u7684MBD\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u56e2\u961f\u4e8e2009\u5e7410\u6708\u6b63\u5f0f\u6210\u7acb\uff0c\u5728\u4e3b\u8d77\u843d\u67b6\u7684\u5e94\u7528\u53d6\u5f97\u521d\u6b65\u6210\u529f\u540e\uff0cMBD\u7684\u5e94\u7528\u6269\u5c55\u5230\u4e86\u6574\u4e2a\u98de\u673a\uff0c\u5e76\u6210\u4e3aY-20\u8ba1\u5212\u6240\u6709\u627f\u5305\u5546\u548c\u5206\u5305\u5546\u7684\u5f3a\u5236\u6027\u8981\u6c42\u3002[10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implementation of MBD was initially met with strong resistance, with only a third of suppliers agreeing to implement MBD. However, the general designer of Y-20 declared that those who refused to implement MBD would be banned from participating in the Y-20 program, thus forcing everyone to comply, resulting in increases in productivity.[10]<\/a><\/sup>
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011MBD\u7684\u5b9e\u65bd\u6700\u521d\u9047\u5230\u4e86\u5f3a\u70c8\u7684\u62b5\u5236\uff0c\u53ea\u6709\u4e09\u5206\u4e4b\u4e00\u7684\u4f9b\u5e94\u5546\u540c\u610f\u5b9e\u65bdMBD\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0cY-20\u7684\u603b\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u5ba3\u5e03\uff0c\u62d2\u7edd\u5b9e\u65bdMBD\u7684\u4f9b\u5e94\u5546\u5c06\u88ab\u7981\u6b62\u53c2\u4e0eY-20\u9879\u76ee\uff0c\u4ece\u800c\u8feb\u4f7f\u6240\u6709\u4f9b\u5e94\u5546\u9075\u5b88\uff0c\u6700\u7ec8\u63d0\u9ad8\u4e86\u751f\u4ea7\u6548\u7387\u3002[10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implementation of MBD greatly shortened the time required. For example, without MBD, installation of wings takes a month or two, but with MBD adopted, the time is drastically shortened to just a few hours, and in general, the design work was reduced by 40%, preparation for production was reduced by 75%, and manufacturing cycle reduced by 30%.[10]<\/a><\/sup> The structural test was completed in 194 days as opposed to the 300 days originally planned, thanks to the successful development and application of an automated structural strength analysis system.[10]<\/a><\/sup> In comparison, similar work for the Xian JH-7<\/a> took a year.[10]<\/a><\/sup>
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011MBD\u7684\u5b9e\u65bd\u6781\u5927\u5730\u7f29\u77ed\u4e86\u6240\u9700\u7684\u65f6\u95f4\u3002\u4f8b\u5982\uff0c\u5728\u6ca1\u6709\u91c7\u7528MBD\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u4e0b\uff0c\u5b89\u88c5\u673a\u7ffc\u9700\u8981\u4e00\u4e24\u4e2a\u6708\u7684\u65f6\u95f4\uff0c\u4f46\u91c7\u7528MBD\u540e\uff0c\u65f6\u95f4\u88ab\u5927\u5e45\u7f29\u77ed\u5230\u4ec5\u4ec5\u51e0\u4e2a\u5c0f\u65f6\u3002\u603b\u4f53\u800c\u8a00\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5de5\u4f5c\u51cf\u5c11\u4e8640%\uff0c\u751f\u4ea7\u51c6\u5907\u51cf\u5c11\u4e8675%\uff0c\u5236\u9020\u5468\u671f\u51cf\u5c11\u4e8630%\u3002[10] \u7ed3\u6784\u6d4b\u8bd5\u5728194\u5929\u5185\u5b8c\u6210\uff0c\u800c\u539f\u672c\u8ba1\u5212\u7684\u65f6\u95f4\u662f300\u5929\uff0c\u8fd9\u5f97\u76ca\u4e8e\u81ea\u52a8\u5316\u7ed3\u6784\u5f3a\u5ea6\u5206\u6790\u7cfb\u7edf\u7684\u6210\u529f\u5f00\u53d1\u548c\u5e94\u7528\u3002[10]\u76f8\u6bd4\u4e4b\u4e0b\uff0c\u897f\u5b89JH-7\u7c7b\u4f3c\u7684\u4f5c\u4e1a\u8017\u65f6\u4e00\u5e74\u3002[10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to 3D printing, the Y-20 is also the first aircraft in China to adopt a Relational-Data-Base-Management (RDBM) system for its development.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Headed by the deputy general designer of structural design, Mr. Feng Jun (\u51af\u519b), the initial attempt to implement RDBM actually failed after two months spent on the application on the nose section. It was only after the second attempt, which took another three months on the application on wings did RDBM became successful.[10]<\/a><\/sup> The adaptation of RDBM greatly shortened the development time by at least eight months, and the modification of wing design that previously took a week is shortened to half a day.[10]<\/a><\/sup> The development of human-machine interface for the Y-20 utilized virtual reality via helmet-mounted display<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/sup>

The Y-20 uses components made of composite materials.[16]<\/a><\/sup> Eight types of different relays<\/a> used on Y-20 are developed by Guilin<\/a> Aerospace Co., Ltd. a wholly own subsidiary of China Tri-River Aerospace Group Co., Ltd.(\u4e2d\u56fd\u4e09\u6c5f\u822a\u5929\u96c6\u56e2)<\/a>, which is also known as the 9th Academy of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation<\/a> (CASIC).[17]<\/a><\/sup> The composites were produced in China, whereas in the past they had to be imported.[18]<\/a><\/sup> The Y-20’s cabin incorporates flame-retardant composites developed by the 703 Institute of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation<\/a> (CASC). The 703 Institute was created in March 2009, with development taking three years. The performance of the composites is reportedly comparable to those that fulfil FAR<\/a> Part 25.835. The 703 Institute achieved another milestone by establishing a comprehensive Chinese evaluation and certification system for aircraft composite materials based on international standards.[17]<\/a><\/sup>

2.2 \u63a8\u8fdb\u7cfb\u7edf | Propulsion<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The Y-20 prototypes were powered by four 12-ton thrust Soloviev D-30KP-2<\/a> engines,[1]<\/a>[19]<\/a><\/sup> and the aircraft entered production in 2016 with those engines.[13]<\/a><\/sup> However, there had always been plans to develop Chinese alternatives.

In 2013, the Shenyang Engine Design and Research Institute was reportedly developing the SF-A, a 28,700-pound thrust engine, for the Y-20 and the Comac C919<\/a>. The SF-A was derived from the core of the WS-15<\/a>. Compared to the WS-20, the SF-A was a conservative design that did not seek to match the technology of state-of-the-art engines.[20]<\/a><\/sup>
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u30112013\u5e74\uff0c\u636e\u62a5\u9053\u6c88\u9633\u53d1\u52a8\u673a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e0e\u7814\u7a76\u6240\u6b63\u5728\u4e3aY-20\u548c\u4e2d\u56fd\u5546\u98deC919\u5f00\u53d1SF-A\u53d1\u52a8\u673a\uff0c\u8be5\u53d1\u52a8\u673a\u63a8\u529b\u4e3a28,700\u78c5\u3002SF-A\u53d1\u52a8\u673a\u6e90\u81eaWS-15\u7684\u6838\u5fc3\u3002\u4e0eWS-20\u76f8\u6bd4\uff0cSF-A\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u4fdd\u5b88\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u6ca1\u6709\u8bd5\u56fe\u5339\u914d\u6700\u5148\u8fdb\u7684\u53d1\u52a8\u673a\u6280\u672f\u3002[20]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Testing with the WS-18 engine (Chinese reverse engineered copy of imported D-30KP-2) may have occurred by late 2017. Compared to the D-30, the WS-18 was 300 kg lighter, weighing in at 2000 kg; with thrust increased from 12.5[clarification needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup> per ton of the D-30 to 13.2[clarification needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup> per ton; fuel consumption of the WS-18 was also reduced in comparison to the D-30, and the mean time between overhaul of the WS-18 was 3000 hours.[21]<\/a>[22]<\/a><\/sup> However, because the increase in thrust was not significant in comparison to the D-30, the WS-18 was only likely to be a stopgap measure before the more modern WS-20 was ready.[22]<\/a>[21]<\/a><\/sup>

The Chinese had also always intended to replace the Soloviev D-30KP-2<\/a> with the 14-ton thrust Shenyang WS-20<\/a>, which was required for the Y-20 to achieve its maximum cargo capacity of 66 tons.[19]<\/a><\/sup> The WS-20 was derived from the core of the Shenyang WS-10<\/a>A, an indigenous Chinese turbofan engine for fighter aircraft.[23]<\/a><\/sup> Single-engine testing with the WS-20 may have occurred by February 2019.[24]<\/a><\/sup> Four-engine in-flight testing may have occurred by December 2020.[25]<\/a><\/sup> The engine was still in development in late-2021.[2]<\/a><\/sup>

In March 2023, Y-20 planes equipped with WS-20 engines (designated Y-20B) were likely incorporated into the PLAAF<\/a> service.[26]<\/a><\/sup> Photos showed Y-20 airplanes with the PLAAF roundels and colors at Kaifeng Air Base.[27]<\/a><\/sup> In the same month, the executive of Aero Engine Corporation of China<\/a> (AECC) announced the that China “[had] overcome all technical bottlenecks” regarding engines such as the WS-20.[28]<\/a><\/sup>

The Y-20’s four-meter tall hold can lift up to 66 tons, and transport up to 2 Type 15<\/a> tanks or 1 Type 99A<\/a> tank over a distance of 7800 km.[29]<\/a><\/sup>

In 2014, a report from the People’s Liberation Army<\/a>‘s National Defence University<\/a> stated that the PRC’s civil and military transport needed 400 Y-20s.[1]<\/a><\/sup> In 2016, Zhu Qian of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China<\/a> stated that more than a thousand were needed.[31]<\/a><\/sup>

After incorporating the Y-20 into the PLAAF service, analysts noted Y-20 had an extremely quick production rate, with a large amount of production aircraft spotted inside the PLAAF testing base.[32]<\/a><\/sup> By 2023, PLAAF was equipped with 67 Y-20 aircraft.[5]<\/a><\/sup>

According to a 2023 assessment by Aviation Week<\/a><\/em>, the Y-20 was scheduled to replace Russian airframes, including the Ilyushin Il-76 and H-6U tanker variants. Analyst Matt Jouppi suggested airborne early warning and control<\/a> was likely under development and that by 2032 China would likely have 75 YY-20 tankers and more than 100 Y-20 transport planes.[5]<\/a><\/sup>

On 6 July 2016 the first serial Y-20 (serial number 11051) was handed over to the PLAAF in a ceremony.[33]<\/a><\/sup> The second aircraft numbered 11052 followed soon after – it was assigned to the 12th Regiment of the 4th Transport Division at Qionglai, Chengdu.[34]<\/a><\/sup>

On 13 February 2020, the Y-20 was part of a fleet that delivered supplies and personnel to Wuhan. The operation was part of an effort to mitigate what became the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>. A fleet of 11 aircraft delivered 2,600 military medical staff to Wuhan. The PLAAF fleet of 11 aircraft consists of 6 Y-20s, 3 Il-76s, and 2 Y-9s transport aircraft.[36]<\/a>[37]<\/a><\/sup> This is Y-20’s first civilian mission, signaling the increasing military involvement in pandemic response.[38]<\/a><\/sup>
