The Tigray War<\/strong>[b]<\/a><\/sup> was an armed conflict<\/a> that lasted from 3 November 2020[a]<\/a><\/sup> to 3 November 2022.[50]<\/a>[51]<\/a><\/sup>The war was primarily fought in the Tigray Region<\/a> of Ethiopia<\/a> between forces allied to the Ethiopian federal government<\/a> and Eritrea<\/a> on one side, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front<\/a> (TPLF) on the other.[52]<\/a>[53]<\/a><\/sup>
\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\uff1a\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u6218\u4e89\u662f\u4e00\u573a\u81ea2020\u5e7411\u67083\u65e5\u6301\u7eed\u81f32022\u5e7411\u67083\u65e5\u7684\u6b66\u88c5\u51b2\u7a81\u3002\u8fd9\u573a\u6218\u4e89\u4e3b\u8981\u5728\u57c3\u585e\u4fc4\u6bd4\u4e9a\u7684\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u5730\u533a\u8fdb\u884c\uff0c\u4ea4\u6218\u53cc\u65b9\u4e00\u65b9\u662f\u4e0e\u57c3\u585e\u4fc4\u6bd4\u4e9a\u8054\u90a6\u653f\u5e9c\u548c\u5384\u7acb\u7279\u91cc\u4e9a\u7ed3\u76df\u7684\u519b\u961f\uff0c\u53e6\u4e00\u65b9\u662f\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u4eba\u6c11\u89e3\u653e\u9635\u7ebf\uff08TPLF\uff09\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of increased tensions and hostilities between the TPLF and the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea, fighting began when TPLF forces attacked the Northern Command headquarters<\/a> of the Ethiopian National Defense Force<\/a> (ENDF), alongside a number of other bases in Tigray.[54]<\/a><\/sup> The ENDF counterattacked from the south \u2013 while Eritrean Defence Forces<\/a> (EDF) began launching attacks from the north \u2013 which Prime Minister<\/a>Abiy Ahmed<\/a> described as a “law enforcement operation”.[55]<\/a>[56]<\/a><\/sup> Federal allied forces captured Mekelle<\/a>, the capital of the Tigray Region, on 28 November, after which Abiy declared the operation “over.”[57]<\/a>[58]<\/a><\/sup> However, the TPLF stated soon afterwards that it would continue fighting until the “invaders” were out,[59]<\/a>[60]<\/a><\/sup> and on 28 June 2021, the Tigray Defense Forces<\/a> (TDF) retook Mekelle; by July the same year, they had also advanced into the Amhara and Afar regions.[61]<\/a><\/sup> In early November 2021, the TDF, together with the Oromo Liberation Army<\/a> (OLA), took control of several towns on the highway south from Tigray Region towards Addis Ababa<\/a>, and the TPLF stated that it considered “marching on [the capital].”[62]<\/a>[63]<\/a><\/sup> Together with seven smaller rebel groups, the TPLF and OLA declared a coalition<\/a> aiming to “dismantle Abiy’s government by force or by negotiations, and then form a transitional authority.”[64]<\/a><\/sup>
\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\uff1a\u7ecf\u8fc7\u591a\u5e74\u7684\u7d27\u5f20\u548c\u654c\u5bf9\uff0c\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u4eba\u6c11\u89e3\u653e\u9635\u7ebf\uff08TPLF\uff09\u4e0e\u57c3\u585e\u4fc4\u6bd4\u4e9a\u548c\u5384\u7acb\u7279\u91cc\u4e9a\u653f\u5e9c\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u51b2\u7a81\u5f00\u59cb\u5347\u7ea7\u3002TPLF\u519b\u961f\u88ad\u51fb\u4e86\u57c3\u585e\u4fc4\u6bd4\u4e9a\u56fd\u5bb6\u56fd\u9632\u90e8\u961f\uff08ENDF\uff09\u7684\u5317\u90e8\u6307\u6325\u90e8\u4ee5\u53ca\u5176\u4ed6\u4f4d\u4e8e\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u57fa\u5730\u3002[54] ENDF\u4ece\u5357\u90e8\u53d1\u8d77\u53cd\u51fb\uff0c\u800c\u5384\u7acb\u7279\u91cc\u4e9a\u56fd\u9632\u519b\uff08EDF\uff09\u5219\u4ece\u5317\u90e8\u53d1\u52a8\u653b\u51fb\u3002\u603b\u7406\u963f\u6bd4\u00b7\u827e\u54c8\u8fc8\u5fb7\u79f0\u8fd9\u662f\u4e00\u6b21”\u6267\u6cd5\u884c\u52a8”\u3002[55][56] \u8054\u90a6\u8054\u5408\u90e8\u961f\u4e8e11\u670828\u65e5\u653b\u5360\u4e86\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u5730\u533a\u7684\u9996\u5e9c\u9ed8\u514b\u83b1\uff0c\u968f\u540e\u963f\u6bd4\u5ba3\u5e03\u884c\u52a8\u7ed3\u675f\u3002[57][58] \u7136\u800c\uff0cTPLF\u5f88\u5feb\u8868\u793a\u5c06\u7ee7\u7eed\u6218\u6597\uff0c\u76f4\u5230”\u4fb5\u7565\u8005”\u88ab\u8d76\u51fa\u53bb\u3002[59][60] 2021\u5e746\u670828\u65e5\uff0c\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u9632\u536b\u519b\uff08TDF\uff09\u91cd\u65b0\u5360\u9886\u4e86\u9ed8\u514b\u83b1\uff1b\u5230\u540c\u5e747\u6708\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u5df2\u7ecf\u63a8\u8fdb\u5230\u963f\u59c6\u54c8\u62c9\u548c\u963f\u6cd5\u5c14\u5730\u533a\u3002[61] 2021\u5e7411\u6708\u521d\uff0cTDF\u4e0e\u5965\u7f57\u83ab\u89e3\u653e\u519b\uff08OLA\uff09\u4e00\u8d77\u63a7\u5236\u4e86\u4ece\u63d0\u683c\u96f7\u5730\u533a\u5411\u5357\u901a\u5f80\u4e9a\u7684\u65af\u4e9a\u8d1d\u5df4\u7684\u9ad8\u901f\u516c\u8def\u4e0a\u7684\u51e0\u4e2a\u57ce\u9547\uff0cTPLF\u8868\u793a\u4ed6\u4eec\u8003\u8651”\u5411\u9996\u90fd\u8fdb\u519b”\u3002[62][63] TPLF\u548cOLA\u4e0e\u4e03\u4e2a\u8f83\u5c0f\u7684 rebel groups\u7ec4\u6210\u8054\u76df\uff0c\u65e8\u5728\u901a\u8fc7\u6b66\u529b\u6216\u8c08\u5224\u89e3\u6563\u963f\u6bd4\u653f\u5e9c\uff0c\u5e76\u6210\u7acb\u8fc7\u6e21\u5f53\u5c40\u3002[64]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a successful government counter-offensive in response, and then a series of negotiations with the TPLF, Ethiopia declared an indefinite humanitarian truce on 24 March 2022, in order to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid into Tigray.[65]<\/a><\/sup> However, fighting dramatically re-escalated in late August 2022, after peace talks broke down.[66]<\/a><\/sup> Rapid mobilization of troops soon followed, with Ethiopia, Eritrea and Tigray reportedly organizing hundreds of thousands of troops against each other by October the same year.[29]<\/a><\/sup> After a number of peace and mediation proposals<\/a> in the intervening years, Ethiopia and the Tigrayan rebel forces agreed to a cessation of hostilities on 2 November<\/a>, which went into effect the day after;[51]<\/a><\/sup>Eritrea was not a party to the agreement, however,[67]<\/a><\/sup>and they largely continued to occupy parts of Tigray as of 2023.[68]<\/a><\/sup>

All sides, particularly the ENDF, EDF, Amhara<\/a> forces and TDF, committed war crimes during the conflict<\/a>.[69]<\/a>[70]<\/a>[71]<\/a>[72]<\/a>[73]<\/a><\/sup> Mass extrajudicial killings<\/a> of civilians took place throughout, including in Axum<\/a>,[74]<\/a><\/sup>Bora<\/a>,[75]<\/a><\/sup> Chenna<\/a>,[76]<\/a>[77]<\/a><\/sup> Kobo<\/a>,[78]<\/a>[79]<\/a><\/sup> the Hitsats refugee camp<\/a>,[80]<\/a><\/sup> Humera<\/a>,[81]<\/a><\/sup> Mai Kadra<\/a>,[73]<\/a>[82]<\/a><\/sup> the Debre Abbay<\/a> monastery,[75]<\/a>[83]<\/a><\/sup> and Zalambessa<\/a>.[84]<\/a><\/sup> Between 162,000\u2013\u2060600,000 people were killed,[45]<\/a>[44]<\/a><\/sup> and war rape<\/a> became a “daily” occurrence, with girls as young as 8 and women as old as 72 being raped, often in front of their families.[85]<\/a>[86]<\/a><\/sup> A major humanitarian crisis developed as a result of the war,[40]<\/a><\/sup> which led to widespread famine<\/a>.[87]<\/a>[42]<\/a><\/sup> It also inflicted immense economic damage on the region, with the cost of rebuilding alone estimated to be roughly $20 billion.[88]<\/a><\/sup>
