noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Mombasa\u2013Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway<\/strong> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard-gauge_railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard-gauge railway<\/a> (SGR) in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenya<\/a> that connects the large <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indian Ocean<\/a> city of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mombasa<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nairobi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nairobi<\/a>, the country&#8217;s capital and largest city. This SGR runs parallel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Narrow-gauge_railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">narrow-gauge<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uganda_Railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uganda Railway<\/a> that was completed in 1901<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[3]<\/a> under <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Africa_Protectorate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British colonial rule<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_African_Railway_Master_Plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">East African Railway Master Plan<\/a> provides for the Mombasa\u2013Nairobi SGR to link with other SGRs being built in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_African_Community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">East African Community<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[4]<\/a><br>\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011\u8499\u5df4\u8428-\u5185\u7f57\u6bd5\u6807\u51c6\u8f68\u8ddd\u94c1\u8def\u662f\u80af\u5c3c\u4e9a\u7684\u4e00\u6761\u6807\u51c6\u8f68\u8ddd\u94c1\u8def(SGR),\u8fde\u63a5\u7740\u5370\u5ea6\u6d0b\u6cbf\u5cb8\u7684\u5927\u90fd\u5e02\u8499\u5df4\u8428\u548c\u80af\u5c3c\u4e9a\u9996\u90fd\u53ca\u6700\u5927\u57ce\u5e02\u5185\u7f57\u6bd5\u3002\u8fd9\u6761\u6807\u51c6\u8f68\u94c1\u8def\u4e0e1901\u5e74\u5728\u82f1\u56fd\u6b96\u6c11\u7edf\u6cbb\u4e0b\u5efa\u6210\u7684\u7a84\u8f68\u4e4c\u5e72\u8fbe\u94c1\u8def\u5e73\u884c\u3002\u4e1c\u975e\u94c1\u8def\u603b\u4f53\u89c4\u5212\u89c4\u5b9a\uff0c\u8499\u5df4\u8428-\u5185\u7f57\u6bd5\u6807\u51c6\u8f68\u94c1\u8def\u5c06\u4e0e\u4e1c\u975e\u5171\u540c\u4f53\u6b63\u5728\u5efa\u8bbe\u7684\u5176\u5b83\u6807\u51c6\u8f68\u94c1\u8def\u76f8\u8fde\u3002[4]<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/picx.zhimg.com\/80\/v2-a5d3a848dbcefc40677cf34d3a6e0d82_720w.jpeg?source=d16d100b\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:452px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/picx.zhimg.com\/80\/v2-3e6392cb2c83b998c40f7f6aa32955bb_720w.jpeg?source=d16d100b\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:448px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>At a cost of US$3.6 billion, the SGR was among Kenya&#8217;s most expensive infrastructure projects as at the time it was launched. The prime contractor was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China_Road_%26_Bridge_Corporation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China Road &amp; Bridge Corporation<\/a> CRBC, which hired 25,000 Kenyans to work on the railway. CRBC&#8217;s holding company, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China_Communications_Construction_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China Communications Construction Company<\/a> is contracted to operate the line for its first five years.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[5]<\/a> As of 2020, railway operation expenses exceeded revenues.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[6]<\/a><br>\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011SGR\u7684\u5efa\u8bbe\u6210\u672c\u4e3a36\u4ebf\u7f8e\u5143\uff0c\u662f\u80af\u5c3c\u4e9a\u5f53\u65f6\u6700\u6602\u8d35\u7684\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u9879\u76ee\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002\u4e3b\u8981\u627f\u5305\u5546\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u8def\u6865\u516c\u53f8(CRBC)\uff0c\u8be5\u516c\u53f8\u96c7\u4f63\u4e862.5\u4e07\u540d\u80af\u5c3c\u4e9a\u4eba\u5728\u8be5\u94c1\u8def\u4e0a\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002 CRBC\u7684\u63a7\u80a1\u516c\u53f8\u4e2d\u56fd\u4ea4\u901a\u5efa\u8bbe\u516c\u53f8\u88ab\u59d4\u6258\u5728\u6700\u521d\u7684\u4e94\u5e74\u5185\u8fd0\u8425\u8be5\u7ebf\u8def\u3002[5] \u622a\u81f32020\u5e74\uff0c\u94c1\u8def\u8fd0\u8425\u652f\u51fa\u8d85\u8fc7\u4e86\u6536\u5165\u3002[6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An extension from Nairobi to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naivasha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naivasha<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suswa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suswa<\/a> beginning in 2018 was completed in October 2019 extending the line&#8217;s length by 120km from its original length of 472km to approximately 592 km (368 mi).<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[7]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[8]<\/a><br>\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011\u5185\u7f57\u6bd5\u81f3\u5948\u74e6\u6c99\u548cSuswa\u7684\u5ef6\u957f\u7ebf\u4e8e2018\u5e74\u5f00\u59cb\uff0c\u4e8e2019\u5e7410\u6708\u5b8c\u6210\uff0c\u5c06\u8be5\u7ebf\u8def\u7684\u957f\u5ea6\u4ece\u6700\u521d\u7684472\u516c\u91cc\u5ef6\u957f\u5230\u7ea6592\u516c\u91cc(368\u82f1\u91cc)\u3002[7][8]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first fare-paying passengers boarded the &#8220;Madaraka Express&#8221; on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madaraka_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madaraka Day<\/a> (1 June 2017), the 54th anniversary of Kenya&#8217;s attainment of self-rule from Great Britain. Because of the rough and hilly terrain, large portions of the SGR were built on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viaduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">viaducts<\/a> and embankments and in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cut_(earthmoving)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cuttings<\/a>.<br>\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011\u5185\u7f57\u6bd5-\u8499\u5df4\u8428\u6807\u51c6\u8f68\u94c1\u8def\u901a\u5e38\u4e0e\u4e4c\u5e72\u8fbe\u94c1\u8def\u5e73\u884c\uff0c\u8fd9\u662f\u5728\u82f1\u56fd\u6b96\u6c11\u7edf\u6cbb\u671f\u95f4\u5efa\u9020\u7684\u4e00\u7c73\u8f68\u8ddd\u94c1\u8def\u3002[14]\u7136\u800c\uff0cSGR\u5177\u6709\u66f4\u76f4\u7684\u7ebf\u8def\u4ee5\u9002\u5e94\u66f4\u9ad8\u7684\u901f\u5ea6\u3002\u7531\u4e8e\u5730\u5f62\u5d0e\u5c96\u591a\u5c71\uff0cSGR\u7684\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u90fd\u5efa\u5728\u9ad8\u67b6\u6865\u3001\u8def\u5824\u548c\u8def\u5811\u4e0a\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the Uganda Railway tackled the hilly terrain near <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mazeras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mazeras<\/a> township by using a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spiral_(railway)#Kenya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spiral<\/a>. In contrast, the SGR passes through this area on two bridges, with the 43.5 metres (142 ft 9 in) high Mazeras-2 bridge being the highest one on the route. As it approaches Nairobi, the SGR crosses the 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Athi_River_Super_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Athi River Super Bridge<\/a>, which at the time of its completion was the sixth-longest bridge in Africa. The SGR passes through the transportation corridor between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsavo_East_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tsavo East National Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsavo_West_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tsavo West National Park<\/a>, which is also host to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nairobi%E2%80%93Mombasa_Road\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nairobi\u2013Mombasa Road<\/a> and the Uganda Railway. Because the road and metre-gauge railway were built at ground level, collisions with wildlife can occur.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-sheldrick2015-16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[16]<\/a> Viaducts and embankments elevate the SGR above ground level, with underpasses allowing wildlife to pass safely underneath.<a Afristar was given the legal right to the first ten years of operation of the SGR, with an interim review set for the end of the fifth year of the contract.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-irj_takeover2-40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[40]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mombasa%E2%80%93Nairobi_Standard_Gauge_Railway#cite_note-41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[41]<\/a> While many of the employees working on the SGR are Kenyans, as of July 2018 Chinese workers still occupied most of the critical positions, including dispatchers and locomotive drivers.
