Yunzhong Commandery<\/a> (Chinese<\/a>: \u96f2\u4e2d\u90e1) was a historical commandery<\/a> of China. Its territories were between the Great Wall<\/a> and Yin Mountains<\/a>, and correspond to part of modern-day Hohhot, Baotou<\/a> and Ulanqab<\/a> prefectures in Inner Mongolia<\/a>. The central city of Yunzhong was in the suburbs of today’s Hohhot.

The commandery was created during King Wuling of Zhao<\/a>‘s reign after a successful campaign against the Linhu (\u6797\u80e1) and Loufan (\u6a13\u7169) peoples.[11]<\/a><\/sup> After the establishment of Qin<\/a> and Han dynasty<\/a>, the commandery became the frontier between Han and the Xiongnu<\/a>. In early Han dynasty, the region saw frequent Xiongnu raids. However, from Emperor Wu<\/a>‘s reign onwards, it became an important base of military operations in the wars against the Xiongnu<\/a>.[12]<\/a><\/sup> In 127 BC, it was from Yunzhong that General Wei Qing<\/a> led a 40,000-men strong cavalry force and conquered the modern Hetao<\/a> and Ordos<\/a> regions. In 2 AD, the commandery administered 11 counties, namely Yunzhong (\u96f2\u4e2d), Xianyang (\u54b8\u967d), Taolin (\u9676\u6797), Zhenling (\u6968\u9675), Duhe (\u72a2\u548c), Shaling (\u6c99\u9675), Yuanyang (\u539f\u967d), Shanan (\u6c99\u5357), Beiyu (\u5317\u8f3f), Wuquan (\u6b66\u6cc9) and Yangshou (\u967d\u58fd). The population totaled 38,303 households, or 173,270 people.[13]<\/a><\/sup> During Eastern Han, 3 counties were abolished, while 3 new counties were added from Dingxiang Commandery<\/a>. In 140 AD, the population was 5,351 households, or a population of 26,430.[14]<\/a><\/sup> Toward the late Han dynasty, the area’s population decreased sharply as residents fled from invading northern nomadic peoples, and the commandery was dissolved.[15]<\/a><\/sup>

The Tuoba chieftain Gui (called Tuoba Gui<\/a>) was able to refound the Dai<\/a> empire in 386. From his capital at Shengle<\/a> (near modern Helingeer). His descendants would, step by step, conquer the north of China, divide the Later Yan<\/a> realm into two parts, and subdue the Xia<\/a> (407\u2013431), the Later Qin<\/a> (384\u2013417) and the many Liang and Yan empires.[16]<\/a><\/sup>

In 1557, the T\u00fcmed<\/a> Mongol leader Altan Khan<\/a> began building the Da Zhao Temple<\/a> on the T\u00fcmed plain in order to convince the Ming dynasty<\/a> (1368\u20131644) government of his leadership of the southern Mongol tribes.[17]<\/a><\/sup> The town that grew up around this temple was called the “Blue Town” (Kokegota<\/em> in Mongolian). The Ming had been blockading<\/a> the Mongols’ access to Chinese iron, cotton, and crop seeds, in order to dissuade them from attacking the North China plain<\/a>. In 1570, Altan Khan successfully negotiated the end of the blockade by establishing a vassal<\/a>-tributary relationship with the Ming, who changed Kokegota’s name to Guihua<\/strong> (traditional Chinese<\/a>: \u6b78\u5316; simplified Chinese<\/a>: \u5f52\u5316; pinyin<\/a>: Gu\u012bhu\u00e0<\/em>; postal<\/a>: Kweihua<\/em>; lit.<\/small> ‘Return to Civilization’) in 1575. The population of Guihua grew to over 150,000 in the early 1630s as local Mongol princes encouraged the settlement of Han Chinese<\/a> merchants. There were occasional attacks on Guihua by Mongol armies, such as the total razing of the city by Ligdan Khan<\/a> in 1631. Altan Khan and his successors constructed temples and fortresses in 1579, 1602 and 1727. The T\u00fcmed Mongols of the area had long since adopted a semiagricultural way of life. Hui<\/a> merchants gathered north of the gate of the city’s fortress, building a mosque in 1693.[18]<\/a><\/sup> Their descendants formed the nucleus of the modern Huimin district.

After the Manchus<\/a> founded the Qing dynasty<\/a> (1644\u20131912), the Kangxi Emperor<\/a> (reigned 1661\u20131722) sent troops to control the region,[9]<\/a><\/sup> which was of interest to the Qing as a center of study of Tibetan Buddhism<\/a>. Just 2 km northeast of Guihua the Qing built the strong garrison town of Suiyuan<\/strong> (traditional Chinese<\/a>: \u7d8f\u9060; simplified Chinese<\/a>: \u7ee5\u8fdc; pinyin<\/a>: PRC<\/a> Standard Mandarin: Su\u00edyu\u01cen, ROC<\/a> Standard Mandarin: Su\u012byu\u01cen<\/em>), from which they supervised the defense of southwestern Inner Mongolia against Mongol attacks from the north in 1735\u201339.[19]<\/a>:\u200a13\u200a[20]<\/a><\/sup> Guihua and Suiyuan was merged into Shanxi<\/a> province and became Guihua County (\u6b78\u5316\u7e23; \u5f52\u5316\u53bf; Gu\u012bhu\u00e0 Xi\u00e0n<\/em>) of Qing China. French missionaries established a Catholic<\/a> church in Guihua in 1874, but the Christians were forced to flee to Beijing during the antiforeign Boxer Rebellion<\/a> of 1899\u20131901.

Guisui was chosen as the region’s administrative centre in 1952, replacing Zhangjiakou<\/a>.
