Bitcoin<\/strong> (abbreviation: BTC<\/strong>; sign<\/a>: \u20bf<\/strong>) is the first decentralized<\/a> cryptocurrency<\/a>. Based on a free-market<\/a> ideology, bitcoin was invented in 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto<\/a>, an unknown person.[5]<\/a><\/sup> Use of bitcoin as a currency<\/a> began in 2009,[6]<\/a><\/sup> with the release of its open-source implementation<\/a>.[7]<\/a>:\u200ach. 1\u200a<\/sup> In 2021, El Salvador adopted it as legal tender<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup> It is mostly seen as an investment<\/a> and has been described by some scholars as an economic bubble<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup> As bitcoin is pseudonymous<\/a>, its use by criminals<\/a> has attracted the attention of regulators, leading to its ban by several countries<\/a> as of 2021.[9]<\/a><\/sup>

The domain name bitcoin.org<\/em> was registered on 18 August 2008.[14]<\/a><\/sup> On 31 October 2008, a link to a white paper<\/a> authored by Satoshi Nakamoto<\/a> titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System<\/em> was posted to a cryptography mailing list.[15]<\/a><\/sup> Nakamoto implemented the bitcoin software as open-source code<\/a> and released it in January 2009.[6]<\/a><\/sup> Nakamoto’s identity remains unknown.[5]<\/a><\/sup> According to computer scientist Arvind Narayanan<\/a>, all individual components of bitcoin originated in earlier academic literature.[11]<\/a><\/sup> Nakamoto’s innovation was their complex interplay resulting in the first decentralized, Sybil resistant, Byzantine fault<\/a> tolerant digital cash system, that would eventually be referred to as the first blockchain.[11]<\/a>[16]<\/a><\/sup> Nakamoto’s paper was not peer reviewed<\/a> and was initially ignored by academics, who argued that it could not work.[11]<\/a><\/sup>

In March 2013, the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network<\/a> (FinCEN) established regulatory guidelines for “decentralized virtual currencies” such as bitcoin, classifying American bitcoin miners who sell their generated bitcoins as money services businesses<\/a>, subject to registration and other legal obligations.[25]<\/a><\/sup> In May 2013, US authorities seized the unregistered exchange<\/a> Mt.
