Sino-Tibetan<\/strong> (also referred to as Trans-Himalayan<\/strong>)[1]<\/a>[2]<\/a><\/sup> is a family<\/a> of more than 400 languages, second only to Indo-European<\/a> in number of native speakers.[3]<\/a><\/sup> Around 1.4 billion people speak a Sino-Tibetan language.[4]<\/a><\/sup> The vast majority of these are the 1.3 billion native speakers of Sinitic languages<\/a>. Other Sino-Tibetan languages with large numbers of speakers include Burmese<\/a> (33 million) and the Tibetic languages<\/a> (6 million). Four United Nations<\/a> member states (China<\/a>, Singapore<\/a>, Myanmar<\/a>, and Bhutan<\/a>) have a Sino-Tibetan language as a main native language. Other languages of the family are spoken in the Himalayas<\/a>, the Southeast Asian Massif<\/a>, and the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau<\/a>. Most of these have small speech communities in remote mountain areas, and as such are poorly documented.

Several low-level subgroups have been securely reconstructed<\/a>, but reconstruction of a proto-language<\/a> for the family as a whole is still at an early stage, so the higher-level structure of Sino-Tibetan remains unclear. Although the family is traditionally presented as divided into Sinitic<\/a> (i.e. Chinese languages) and Tibeto-Burman<\/a> branches, a common origin of the non-Sinitic languages has never been demonstrated. The Kra\u2013Dai<\/a> and Hmong\u2013Mien languages<\/a> are generally included within Sino-Tibetan by Chinese linguists but have been excluded by the international community since the 1940s. Several links to other language families<\/a> have been proposed, but none have broad acceptance.
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011\u867d\u7136\u5df2\u7ecf\u53ef\u9760\u5730\u91cd\u6784\u4e86\u51e0\u4e2a\u4f4e\u5c42\u6b21\u7684\u5b50\u7fa4\uff0c\u4f46\u6574\u4e2a\u8bed\u7cfb\u7684\u539f\u59cb\u8bed\u8a00\u91cd\u6784\u4ecd\u5904\u4e8e\u521d\u7ea7\u9636\u6bb5\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u6c49\u85cf\u8bed\u7cfb\u7684\u9ad8\u5c42\u7ed3\u6784\u4ecd\u7136\u4e0d\u660e\u786e\u3002\u5c3d\u7ba1\u4f20\u7edf\u4e0a\u5c06\u8be5\u8bed\u7cfb\u5212\u5206\u4e3a\u6c49\u8bed\u65cf\uff08\u5373\u4e2d\u6587\u8bed\u8a00\uff09\u548c\u85cf\u7f05\u8bed\u65cf\u4e24\u5927\u5206\u652f\uff0c\u4f46\u975e\u6c49\u8bed\u65cf\u8bed\u8a00\u7684\u5171\u540c\u8d77\u6e90\u4ece\u672a\u5f97\u5230\u8bc1\u5b9e\u3002\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u8bed\u8a00\u5b66\u5bb6\u901a\u5e38\u5c06\u4f97\u53f0\u8bed\u7cfb\u548c\u82d7\u7476\u8bed\u7cfb\u7eb3\u5165\u6c49\u85cf\u8bed\u7cfb\uff0c\u4f46\u81ea20\u4e16\u7eaa40\u5e74\u4ee3\u4ee5\u6765\uff0c\u56fd\u9645\u793e\u4f1a\u4e00\u76f4\u5c06\u5b83\u4eec\u6392\u9664\u5728\u5916\u3002\u5c3d\u7ba1\u6709\u4eba\u63d0\u51fa\u4e86\u4e0e\u5176\u4ed6\u8bed\u7cfb\u5b58\u5728\u8054\u7cfb\u7684\u51e0\u79cd\u8bf4\u6cd5\uff0c\u4f46\u5747\u672a\u5f97\u5230\u5e7f\u6cdb\u8ba4\u53ef\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. \u5386\u53f2\uff08\u5b66\u672f\u53f2\uff09| History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A genetic relationship<\/a> between Chinese, Tibetan, Burmese, and other languages was first proposed in the early 19th century and is now broadly accepted. The initial focus on languages of civilizations with long literary traditions has been broadened to include less widely spoken languages, some of which have only recently, or never, been written. However, the reconstruction of the family is much less developed than for families such as Indo-European<\/a> or Austroasiatic<\/a>. Difficulties have included the great diversity of the languages, the lack of inflection in many of them, and the effects of language contact. In addition, many of the smaller languages are spoken in mountainous areas that are difficult to reach and are often also sensitive border zones.[5]<\/a><\/sup> There is no consensus regarding the date and location of their origin.[6]<\/a><\/sup>
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u3011\u6c49\u8bed\u3001\u85cf\u8bed\u3001\u7f05\u7538\u8bed\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u8bed\u8a00\u4e4b\u95f4\u5b58\u5728\u4eb2\u7f18\u5173\u7cfb\u7684\u8bf4\u6cd5\u6700\u65e9\u4e8e19\u4e16\u7eaa\u521d\u88ab\u63d0\u51fa\uff0c\u73b0\u5728\u8fd9\u4e00\u89c2\u70b9\u5df2\u88ab\u5e7f\u6cdb\u63a5\u53d7\u3002\u8d77\u521d\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u91cd\u70b9\u96c6\u4e2d\u5728\u5177\u6709\u60a0\u4e45\u6587\u5b66\u4f20\u7edf\u7684\u6587\u660e\u6240\u4f7f\u7528\u7684\u8bed\u8a00\u4e0a\uff0c\u73b0\u5728\u5df2\u6269\u5927\u5230\u5305\u62ec\u4f7f\u7528\u8303\u56f4\u8f83\u5c0f\u7684\u8bed\u8a00\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u4e9b\u8bed\u8a00\u6700\u8fd1\u624d\u88ab\u4e66\u5199\uff0c\u751a\u81f3\u4ece\u672a\u88ab\u4e66\u5199\u8fc7\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u4e0e\u5370\u6b27\u8bed\u7cfb\u6216\u5357\u5c9b\u8bed\u7cfb\u7b49\u8bed\u7cfb\u76f8\u6bd4\uff0c\u6c49\u85cf\u8bed\u7cfb\u7684\u91cd\u5efa\u5de5\u4f5c\u8fdb\u5c55\u5f97\u5e76\u4e0d\u987a\u5229\u3002\u5176\u4e2d\u7684\u56f0\u96be\u5305\u62ec\u8bed\u8a00\u591a\u6837\u6027\u5927\u3001\u8bb8\u591a\u8bed\u8a00\u7f3a\u4e4f\u8bcd\u5f62\u53d8\u5316\u4ee5\u53ca\u8bed\u8a00\u63a5\u89e6\u7684\u5f71\u54cd\u3002\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u8bb8\u591a\u4f7f\u7528\u8303\u56f4\u8f83\u5c0f\u7684\u8bed\u8a00\u5206\u5e03\u5728\u96be\u4ee5\u5230\u8fbe\u7684\u5c71\u533a\uff0c\u800c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5730\u533a\u5f80\u5f80\u4e5f\u662f\u654f\u611f\u7684\u8fb9\u5883\u5730\u533a\u3002[5]\u5173\u4e8e\u8fd9\u4e9b\u8bed\u8a00\u7684\u8d77\u6e90\u65f6\u95f4\u548c\u5730\u70b9\uff0c\u5c1a\u672a\u8fbe\u6210\u5171\u8bc6\u3002[6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5fb7\u56fd<\/a>\u5b66\u8005\u6731\u5229\u65af\u00b7\u514b\u62c9\u666e\u7f57\u7279<\/a>\u65e9\u57281823\u5e74\u5c31\u63d0\u51fa\u6c49\u8bed<\/a>\u3001\u85cf\u8bed<\/a>\u3001\u7f05\u7538\u8bed<\/a>\u7684\u57fa\u7840\u8bcd\u6c47\u4e4b\u95f4\u6709\u540c\u6e90\u5173\u7cfb\uff0c\u800c\u6cf0\u8bed<\/a>\u548c\u8d8a\u5357\u8bed<\/a>\u5219\u4e0d\u540c\u3002\u4f46\u540e\u6765\u4ed6\u7684\u8457\u4f5c\u88ab\u6de1\u5fd8\u4e86\uff0c\u4e00\u76f4\u523020\u4e16\u7eaa\uff0c\u5b66\u8005\u4eec\u624d\u91cd\u65b0\u91cd\u89c6\u4ed6\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.1 \u65e9\u671f\u5de5\u4f5c | Early work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the 18th century, several scholars noticed parallels between Tibetan and Burmese, both languages with extensive literary traditions. Early in the following century, Brian Houghton Hodgson<\/a> and others noted that many non-literary languages of the highlands of northeast India and Southeast Asia were also related to these. The name “Tibeto-Burman” was first applied to this group in 1856 by James Richardson Logan<\/a>, who added Karen<\/a> in 1858.[7]<\/a>[8]<\/a><\/sup> The third volume of the Linguistic Survey of India<\/a><\/em>, edited by Sten Konow<\/a>, was devoted to the Tibeto-Burman languages of British India<\/a>.[9]<\/a><\/sup>
\u3010\u53c2\u8003\u8bd1\u6587\u301118\u4e16\u7eaa\u65f6\uff0c\u51e0\u4f4d\u5b66\u8005\u6ce8\u610f\u5230\u85cf\u8bed\u548c\u7f05\u7538\u8bed\u4e4b\u95f4\u5b58\u5728\u76f8\u4f3c\u4e4b\u5904\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e24\u79cd\u8bed\u8a00\u90fd\u6709\u7740\u60a0\u4e45\u7684\u6587\u5b66\u4f20\u7edf\u3002\u5728\u63a5\u4e0b\u6765\u7684\u4e16\u7eaa\u521d\uff0c\u5e03\u83b1\u6069\u00b7\u970d\u987f\u00b7\u970d\u5947\u68ee\uff08Brian Houghton Hodgson\uff09\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u4eba\u6307\u51fa\uff0c\u5370\u5ea6\u4e1c\u5317\u90e8\u548c\u4e1c\u5357\u4e9a\u9ad8\u5730\u5730\u533a\u7684\u8bb8\u591a\u975e\u6587\u5b66\u8bed\u8a00\u4e5f\u4e0e\u8fd9\u4e24\u79cd\u8bed\u8a00\u6709\u5173\u30021856\u5e74\uff0c\u8a79\u59c6\u65af\u00b7\u7406\u67e5\u5fb7\u68ee\u00b7\u6d1b\u6839\uff08James Richardson Logan\uff09\u9996\u6b21\u5c06\u201c\u85cf\u7f05\u8bed\u65cf\u201d\u8fd9\u4e00\u540d\u79f0\u5e94\u7528\u4e8e\u8fd9\u4e00\u8bed\u7fa4\uff0c\u5e76\u57281858\u5e74\u5c06\u514b\u94a6\u8bed\uff08Karen\uff09\u4e5f\u5f52\u5165\u5176\u4e2d\u3002[7][8]\u7531\u65af\u7279\u6069\u00b7\u79d1\u8bfa\uff08Sten Konow\uff09\u7f16\u8f91\u7684\u300a\u5370\u5ea6\u8bed\u8a00\u8c03\u67e5\u300b\uff08Linguistic Survey of India\uff09\u7b2c\u4e09\u5377\u4e13\u95e8\u63a2\u8ba8\u4e86\u82f1\u56fd\u5370\u5ea6\u5730\u533a\u7684\u85cf\u7f05\u8bed\u65cf\u8bed\u8a00\u3002[9]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studies of the “Indo-Chinese” languages of Southeast Asia from the mid-19th century by Logan and others revealed that they comprised four families: Tibeto-Burman, Tai<\/a>, Mon\u2013Khmer<\/a> and Malayo-Polynesian<\/a>. Julius Klaproth<\/a> had noted in 1823 that Burmese, Tibetan, and Chinese all shared common basic vocabulary<\/a> but that Thai<\/a>, Mon<\/a>, and Vietnamese<\/a> were quite different.[10]<\/a>[11]<\/a><\/sup> Ernst Kuhn<\/a> envisaged a group with two branches, Chinese-Siamese and Tibeto-Burman.[a]<\/sup> August Conrady<\/a> called this group Indo-Chinese in his influential 1896 classification, though he had doubts about Karen. Conrady’s terminology was widely used, but there was uncertainty regarding his exclusion of Vietnamese. Franz Nikolaus Finck<\/a> in 1909 placed Karen as a third branch of Chinese-Siamese.[12]<\/a>[13]<\/a><\/sup>

Jean Przyluski<\/a> introduced the French term sino-tib\u00e9tain<\/em> as the title of his chapter on the group in Meillet<\/a> and Cohen<\/a>‘s Les langues du monde<\/em> in 1924.[14]<\/a>[15]<\/a><\/sup> He divided them into three groups: Tibeto-Burman, Chinese and Tai,[14]<\/a><\/sup> and was uncertain about the affinity of Karen and Hmong\u2013Mien<\/a>.[16]<\/a><\/sup> The English translation “Sino-Tibetan” first appeared in a short note by Przyluski and Luce<\/a> in 1931.[17]<\/a><\/sup>
